A sign of things to come as Scarabeo 125/200 gets fuel injection and a new model the "Class".
Throughout its history the Scarabeo has always proven to be a unique vehicle, always capable of evolving to adapt to the changing market needs. A market that today prefers practical “small on the outside and big on the inside” vehicles that can better tackle the snares of increasingly congested traffic.
This is why the first Scarabeo scooter with an over 50 cc engine has been given more modern contents, has been reduced in size, but has not changed in its philosophy. The Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. is able to meet all modern mobility needs, and does so with new elegance and a touch of fashion added to its practicality and performance.
For 2010, the Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. is offered in the special “Class” version dedicated to a target of users attentive to stylish accents that does not overlook comfort and refinement in details.
Chromed rear-view mirrors, new graphics on the instrument panel, front grille, matt-coloured front shield panels and chromed stanchion covers are just a few of the distinctive features of the “Class” series.
The Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. Class meets the greatest needs of comfort and load capacity of urban mobility with its standard windshield, a 35 litre rear top box with backrest and a new saddle. So not only has attention been paid to stylish accents, but to functionality as well.
The Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. Class also presents itself as a new design object with its dedicated colour “Class Green”.
Its unique design, a classic example of Italian style, once again follows the guidelines that should be an inspiration to everyone. Its refinement of construction outdistances everything that is “simply a scooter”.
The Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. is the most compact and city-perfect model of the Scarabeo scooter range with over 50 cc. engines. This luxury “entry level” vehicle boasts a quality to price ratio that is nothing short of exceptional to say the least.
Design: details that count
Sharp features combined with soft lines create a continuity that suggests harmony at first glance. Once again the Scarabeo is redefining city scooter design. In a world that today is full of “disposable” products, the reassuring line of the Scarabeo is a fixed point.
The footrest is flat so the load capacity is increased. The windshield fastened to the steering head deflects the air flow beyond the rider, guaranteeing turbulence-free travel. The totally complete analogue-digital instrument panel offers an actual on-board computer that can be controlled directly from the handlebar. Standing out amongst the many available options is the outside temperature reading with “ice warning” that alerts the rider to any ice present. The stand is designed to provide a very favourable leverage arm, so parking the Scarabeo is child's play.
The aluminium luggage carrier provides the ideal surface for mounting a top box. An expert use of chrome and the turn indicators built into the handlebar are some of the details that make the Scarabeo a vehicle of unique elegance.
Engines
As has always been true for the Scarabeo, once again its classic line embraces the best of available technology. The engine of the Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. was designed and developed expressly for this scooter. This state of the art, light, rational and clean engine offers outstanding performance and fuel economy with remarkably low vibration and ultra-low emissions, in keeping with the Scarabeo philosophy of creating only environment-friendly vehicles.
Both engines are liquid-cooled and equipped with four valve timing with double overhead camshafts, a sophisticated solution that optimises engine operation.
The arrival of electronic fuel injection has brought with it enormous benefits in terms of both performance - further improved in maximum speed, pick-up and acceleration - and consumption by further lowering the fuel demands of this already parsimonious scooter. Additionally, and for the first time ever on a scooter, Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. also allows the user to choose between two different engine mappings. The user can now select between ECO mode, which reduces fuel consumption by up to 7% and SPORT mode, which optimises performance, directly from the handlebar.
The 200cc engine delivers an impressive 14.3 kW (19.5 HP) at 8,000 rpm, together with extremely generous torque (18.5 Nm at 6,750 rpm), meaning that the Scarabeo can accelerate enthusiastically but is also relaxing and safe to ride in all conditions.
The 125 cc engine produces the maximum power output permitted by law for its capacity, and can be ridden with just a normal category B driver's license.
Its available 11 kW (15 HP) provide responsive and safe riding, also owing to its particularly low weight, which makes the Scarabeo one of the lightest vehicles of its category.
Chassis
The classic and at the same time trendy look of the Scarabeo has never restricted engineers when it comes to defining the chassis. On the contrary, preserving many of the far-sighted aesthetic and engineering values found on the entire range has been an exceptional starting point also in developing this model.
The Scarabeo 125/200 i.e. was designed with the aim of upholding all of those unique features that have made the Scarabeo an icon of urban mobility, although without losing sight of the evolutionary concepts that lie at the heart of every new Aprilia product: exceptional rideability, performance and safety. These decisive values are also indelebly engraved in the DNA of the Scarabeo 125/200ie, which is flexible, safe in all situations and able to convey motorcycling sensations over the routes travelled.
The merits of this result are to be attributed to the high levels of torsional rigidity and strength of the new chassis, made from high strength steel tubing, and to the perfect set-up of the suspension able to ensure an ultimate feel of the road and outstanding absorption of bumps.
The telescopic hydraulic front fork has stanchions of a good 35 mm in diameter, whereas in the rear it is the same engine-transmission unit aided by a secondary aluminium arm that performs the swingarm function: It is a simple and lightweight, and at the same time effective, solution, also thanks to the possibility of adjusting the spring preload on four positions, depending on the transported weight and the riding style.
The refined wheel rims are fitted with 16 inch high-profile tubeless tyres (100/80 in front and 120/80 in the rear): they are a perfect solution for getting round all the traps of the city and contribute to giving the vehicle excellent stability and intuitive riding, within reach of any user, whatever experience he may have.
The Scarabeo has never come up short when it comes to brakes, and this new 125/200 i.e. version is certainly no different. The 260 mm front disc, with triple parallel piston floating calliper, and the 220 mm rear disc with dual piston calliper are matched with an unprecedented integrated braking system able to distribute the braking force between the two wheels and ensure shorter, and safer, stopping distances.
